The Acacia tree in our trademark logo, which is a suitable image of our history. Our roots run deep in South Africa, thanks’ to the commitment of serving the needs of our clients.
Did you know that FNB is the oldest bank in South Africa and that we were founded in the amazing town called Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape back in 1838?
A division of First Rand Bank
Today we trade as a division of First Rand Bank Limited, two things, in particular, stand out when we look at our history, a story of survival – different situation’s in South Africa have modelled many great challenges of which FNB has effectively met. The second story is about people, and how our history has always been a firm influence when it comes to the people we serve.
The FNB breakthrough into the financial market
Breakthrough in FNB’s history took place in 1998 when the financial services interest of Anglo American and Rand Merchant Bank Holdings were merged to form FirstRand Limited. In this process, FNB was delisted from JSE on the 25th of May 1998 to be a wholly-owned subordinate of First Rand.
The First Rand Bank was listed on the JSE in May the 25th 1998. The banking interest took a turn on 30 June 1999, FirstRand formally merged into a single entity to form First Rand Bank being FNB, WesBank and RMB who now trade as divisions of First Rand Bank.
