NSFAS will help you to get the best education possible to reach your goals.

The government has a budget for higher education through the Department of Education. This is then filtered to NSFAS, which subsequently provides financial aid to students in need.

What is covered by the study loan

Accommodation is included as well as transport of R7,500 per year within a radius of 40 kilometres from the university, and a living allowance of R15,000 per annum. R 5,200 is given for the purchasing of textbooks and there is also an R2,900 allowance for personal care.

Students with disabilities will also receive funding, university allowance support, and equipment like wheelchairs, and special computer devices according to their needs.

Get your study financing on track

The repayment will be based on your salary once you start working so there is no given time limit. If you are unemployed, they will not expect payment from you.

Repayment amounts

To make payment arrangements you can email their kind and professional staff and they will be more than happy to assist you with any concerns regarding payments.

Based on your yearly income you will have to pay a low-interest rate of 3% on a salary of R30,000 per annum. An increase of an additional 1% for every R6,600 you earn above R30,000 per annum.

The NSFAS wallet

You will be able to draw money and spend it at any business registered by NSFAS. Make sure that you have access to the cell phone number you provided upon application, this number will be used for the deposit of your funds. They will also communicate with you using this number.

The withdrawal amounts range from R200 up to a maximum of R1,000 per day. Stores available to draw cash are Checkers, Boxer, U-Save, and selected spar stores.

NSFAS is the financial aid of choice when you’re set to start pursuing your education goals

To apply for a student loan you will need a certified copy of your identity document. If you are dependent on your parents or guardian, you will need a certified ID copy and a payslip.

In a case where you are employed and don’t have a guardian or parent, you will need to provide a payslip or letter of employment.

Those with disabilities need to complete the disability annexure. If you are an orphan, you will need to provide a declaration form with the needed documents attached.

Follow these easy steps to create an NSFAS account

  • Go onto the NFSAS website and click on the “my NSFAS tab”
  • Fill in your ID number, full name and surname, email address, and contact details
  • Click on the “accept” option for NSFAS to verify the information you entered
  • The username will be your email address and you will have to create a password
  • Upload a copy of your ID and choose the register option
  • You will receive an OTP via email and SMS
  • Enter the OTP in the tab provided and click submit
  • An SMS and email to confirm that you’re my NSFAS account has been created
